Half Way There

We're visiting with Gena's sister, Julia, in Perris, CA. We've actually got a few things we'll need to do here so I think we'll be here until this weekend. We had a nice looong drive from Luis' house. It took over 10 hours and we pulled in at 1:30am to Julia's. Thank you for your prayers.

Tracy, California

We made it to Lincoln with no problems. Although, the van did run a little warm (I guess that's normal when it's over a 100 out!). We took it easy and spent two nights with Gena's sister and her family. Sunday afternoon, we made it to Gena's brother's house, Luis, in Tracy. We brought Gena's mom with us who was staying in Lincoln with her sister. She decided to come visit Luis and stay here for a while because he has AC in the house. Lincoln was VERY HOT!

It's Monday night and we've spent the day visiting with Luis' family and has been very nice. We've really enjoyed ourselves here. Especially Rebecka who has made really good friends with her cousin Giselle. They have a lot of fun playing "princess."

We went to dinner at a Chinese Buffet and I'm full! We spent the evening in the front yard playing and talking, then moved into the back yard and most everybody hopped in the pool to cool off.

We're On Our Way!!

We left around 3pm on Wednesday and it took us quite a while just to get to Portland where we stayed the night. There was a loooong backup for a road construction we had to go through. Everyone is doing fine. We've been able to stop quite a bit for Emma to eat and for Rebecka to get out and run around. Everything seems to be going very well.

We are currently at a Super 8 in Yreka, CA. We hope to get to Lincoln, CA tomorrow to visit with Gena's oldest sister and mother. We should be staying there at least a couple of nights.

Please continue to pray for travelling mercies and for no mechanical mishaps. Blessings to everyone!

A Van for Cofradia!!

For about a year now we've been looking to get a people mover. Our first choice was a 25-30 passenger school bus, but we found out we couldn't legalize them in Mexico. So, we chose to look for a 15 passenger van. Last Thursday, after looking for about 3 or 4 weeks, Gena and I went to Portland to look at a van and it turns out to be something that I believe will be a great asset to our ministry. I'm really excited because we have a youth retreat coming up next month as soon as we arrive in Cofradia. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to be able to take a bunch of youth to the retreat. Thank you to all of you who have given so generously towards this purchase. We are leaving for Mexico on Wednesday and we'll drive it down along with our own vehicle as well. Costs of gas, tolls, and the legalization I'm thinking will end up being nearly $2,000. Please pray for a safe trip and no mechanical problems.

Doug and Jan Taylor Progress

I received an email a couple of days ago on Doug's progress...

Dear Family and friends,

Just a few lines to update you on Doug's progress. He is slowly gaining strength and is on his second day of gelatin and liquids. He is still on his nutrition feed which goes through his central line. He had an infection in the largest incision, which is often the case when they have had to open the same incision for the second time. But, they have been draining it daily and it is on the mend as well. Please continue to pray against infection and for healing to happen on the inside as well as the outside. We are encouraged by all of the emails and the prayers that are ongoing for the both of us.

Please continue to pray that all will go well and that his stomach will be able to tolerate the foods that they are going to start to introduce in the next day or so. We do feel the presence of God and the prayers of His people. Continue also to pray for those here who are serving us - for wisdom, strength, faith and everything else we need and also for our family in Canada - Thanks again. Bless you and yours .
Love as always,
Jan for both

A Trip to Court!

We went to the Bremerton Municipal Court today. We found out at a friend's house the other day that we may need to have a passport for everyone starting in 2007 in order to enter the US again. So, we went ahead and got everything done so we'll have it before the new year. Rebecka and Emma both will have passports now. Total cost for everything was $99 each.

Baby Dedication--Emma

We had a special day today and dedicated Emma Rose to the Lord at our Home Church in Poulsbo. She was 2 months old yesterday.

Demolition Derby

Last night I went to the Kitsap Demolition Derby at the fairgrouns with my niece, Trisha, and one of her friends. I haven't been to one of these is a long time. It was pretty fun to see all the cars crash into one another again. I'm amazed at how they keep these things running!

Friday Golf

Friday, I went golfing for the first time in about 8 years. I had such a good time! I went with my friend, Jeff, from college. We've never golfed together before so it was nice and we had a great time fellowshipping. We golfed at Horseshoe Lake Golf Course. Thanks, Jeff.

Van Hunt

We went to look at a couple of vans today over in Seattle and they turned out to be...unwantable.

We are looking for and raising money for a 15 passenger Ford, Chevy, or GMC van for our ministry in Cofradia. As the Youth Director, I see so much potential for using a van, it opens up a big door of opportunities.

Let me know if you know of a van that fits this description:

15 Passenger
Ford, Chevy, GMC
1991-1996
150K miles or less

Thanks...

Doug and Jan Taylor

I received an email today from fellow Missionaries in Cofradia, Doug and Jan Taylor. Please remember them in your prayers.

Its Saturday morning and I (Doug) am sitting in the hospital trying to keep busy while recovering from surgery last Monday. I don't know how soon I will be able to get this out because we do not have an internet connection here. I know some of you have been kept up to date on my progress but many of you have not.

This whole "adventure" began a few weeks ago when we were scheduling an endoscopy for Jan with her Dr. Montemayor in Guadalajara. He was trying to determine the cause of her gastric problems which were not going away. We thought that as long as we were going to be in Guad for a few days it would be a good opportunity for me to have a colonoscopy which my Dr. in Winnipeg had recommended 2 years earlier. He felt that because of my age and a history of colon cancer in my family it would be a good check. We were very confident in Dr. Montemayor and since it was much easier to schedule in Guadalajara than in Winnipeg we booked it. The day came and Jan had her endoscopy first while I waited in a waiting room. My turn came and when I came out of the anesthetic I was expecting the Dr. to tell me everything went well and he would hand me my personal copy on DVD.

Not so. The colonoscopy did not go well and had to be terminated because of severe diverticulitis (small outpouchings of the large intestine) which prevented the probe from moving up the colon. Dr. Montemayor scheduled a barium enema xray a few days later. Both of these tests required colon cleansing which meant going for a full day of nothing by mouth except clear liquids as well as a strong oral laxative. The xray confirmed the diverticulitis was very severe and further up the colon than the colonoscopy had shown. It also showed that the descending colon which is normally of the left side of the body, for some reason was on the opposite side. There was no indication why this should be and after an examination Dr. Montemayor was convinced that there was no mass or tumor. He ordered a catscan which confirmed there was no mass and so we decided to go ahead with a laproscopic surgery to remove the diseased part of the colon. This appeared to give the fastest recovery time, less opportunity for complications and lowest risk. Dr. Montemayor was sure to indicate that there is always a possibility of having to convert to open surgery but we were believing that I would not need this. The surgery was slightly more complicated because of high blood pressure and so I began a 5 day preparation which included BP checks twice a day, soft diet for 3 days and clear liquids and oral Fleet enemas for 2 days before checking into the hospital for the final day for one more day of liquids and final cleansing treatment.

My surgery was on Monday. It was considered to be a major one as they cut away nearly half of my large bowel and did an anastomosis to join the non-divirticular parts back together again. The operation should have taken about 3 hours. Jan was left in my room at 8:30 am and I did not come out of surgery until after 7 at night.

Dr. Montemayor and his team operated for 9 and a half hours. It was a real mess and they had to stop the laporoscopy surgery and convert to an open one where they would have more space to work. There was large bowel (because of previous infected diverticulitis) stuck to my appendix, my spleen, some parts of my small intestine were also affected.

We are so grateful to our doctor and his team. Most others would have just taken one look at the horrendous amount of work, cutting and setting my organs free, that they would have just left it and put in a permanent colostomy (bag).

I am recovering slowly. Tuesday, Dr.Montemayor stitched in a central intravenous line threaded into the veina cava (under my collar bone). Dr. Montemayor and an internal medicine specialist here in the hospital felt this was necessary for my liquids that theyth are giving me to be able to be better assimilated into my systems. I am on a protein, glucose, lipids and a host of other things including antibiotics and medicine to prevent gastritis . They are keeping me on many pain injections as I need to start moving. Because of such a long surgery, it is important that my lungs and vascular systems work well to help in this fight and so that there are no more complications.

Wed was a rough day. I was nauseated most of time and had little or no energy. I had a bit of fever which really concerned the doctors and after a hour long meeting in my room the 3 specialists determined that the nausea was a result of the medicines, drugs etc and were giving me gastritis. They dropped some of the drugs, changed the antibiotics and gave me something for gastritis. The change was great. I now have energy to get up and walk a bit, and am free from nausea or dizziness. I have had the catheter into my bladder removed and they are talking about introducing sips of water tonight. So far, It seems that everything is working ok. although the real test will be how everything works after I start taking in soft foods and start to eliminate them from my body!!

It is still rather amazing to all of us, including Dr. Montemayor, that I have not experienced severe problems beforehand and that none of these infections have perforated.
There is still a long way to go...probably a good 3 weeks in Guad before we can return to Cofradia and at least 6 weeks before we can travel to Canada.

Please remember pray for both of us. We both need strength and patience for the coming days and weeks. Please pray that the astomosis would heal correctly and quickly, and that my digestive system would work as God intended it to. Pray against infection. Thanks so much for your continued support. Also please pray that our insurance would cover most of our expenses as they are almost twice as high as anyone anticipated. Thanks again. God is Able -to keep that which is commited to Him!

love,
Doug and Jan
MONDAY JUNE 5 - Doug had a bad night with low fever, chills and pain in his abdomen. This morning both specialists ordered new blood tests, X-rays etc. It appears that there has been a leak or letting go of the astomosis. The tests showed intestinal gas in his abdomen - near the lungs. Please pray!! The surgery will be at 5:00p.m. They are gathering the team even now. The only solution now is to do a colostomy (bag). We don't know whether it will be permanent or temporary - depends on the size of the fistula (opening in the repaired colon) We did get the biopsy and the photos etc of the part they removed last week and it is just amazing that he has been able to function with such a diseased colon. Please pray for wisdom for Dr. Montemayor - for strength and a steady hand and mind. Pray for Doug that he will come through this strong (he will have a spinal so as not to put any undue stress on his lungs etc.) Pray for quick healing and for the peace of God that transcends all of our understanding. Pray for these folks here in Guad who are our hands and feet right now - bringing up things and running errands etc. Please also pray for our daughters, Tanis and Julie and their families as well as my mum, Janey as it is difficult for them to be so far away. Please keep praying also for our finances that we will have the OK of the insurance company to cover these unanticipated expenses. Thanks for standing in the gap - Love for both - Jan
