UPDATE!  02/2012

We are excited about the progress of the Upper Room Project.  Because of some complications with the lack of material, we had to wait a few weeks before we were able to have the roof poured.  At the moment, the walls are up, the roof is poured, and we've just finished adding a layer of lime-rock on the roof for insulation.  Our next steps are to seal the roof with one-inch thick, five inch square brick once the lime-rock has completely dried.  After we take the forms down, we'll work on finishing up the electrical, plumbing, purchase windows, smoothwall, install windows, floor leveling, painting, finish work, and tile. We still have a long ways to go, but for the most part our house will be mostly dry (because of the windows) if it rains.  Here is a picture of the roof being poured.
A big thank you to those of you who have sent gifts to help us finish this.  If you have not been able to do so, click on the flyer above to enlarge it and you'll see how to give at the bottom of the middle section.  THANK YOU!

UPDATE! 04/2012
The focus has been to get the roof done before it rains.  On the last day of January, we had the roof poured.  A few days later we added a layer of a lime-rock/cement mix for insulation.  All of March was spent on the finishing touches of the roof with setting small tiles, connecting the water tank, and sealing it with a thin layer of cement.  We are setting in the electrical wires and starting to smooth-wall the inside.

Now that the roof is done, we want to get the smooth-wall done in order to install the windows.  Then, the house will be secure and we won't have to worry about leaving it "open."

THANK YOU to those who have helped by sending in donations for this project!

UPDATE! 07/2012
A continued thanks to those who have helped continue with what we started.

We are nearing the end of the smooth wall stucco phase for the interior and exterior.  This is as far as our finances will take us as we had an unexpected back porch roof repair.
Hugo has been working on finishing up the smooth-walling.  You can see the "Upper Room" exterior in process as the back porch roof is being worked on as well.  We are replacing the thatch roof with metal sheeting.
The next steps we do not yet have finances for are (not necessarily in this order):

  • Seal the interior and exterior walls and ceiling.
  • Install windows (this is pretty important as bats have been living with us since we put the roof on).
  • Level the floor (at the moment, it's the old roof with a slight grade for water run-off).
  • Install toilet, sink, and tub.
  • Paint interior and exterior walls and ceiling.
  • Install doors, stairway handrails, electrical, finish plumbing.
  • Tile and trim.
  • Move in (furnish).

UPDATE! 02/2013
Many of you have been asking about how things are going.  They have slowed down a bit due to some detail work I've needed to do as well as waiting for Geña's cousin to start the stairway tile work in order to do the floor.  In the meantime, I've been working on getting a few things done here and there.  As for the list above, we have

  • Sealed the interior and exterior walls and ceiling,
  • Installed the windows
  • Leveled the floor
  • Installed the sinks and tub
  • Painted the interior walls (excluding one room) and ceilings
  • Finished the plumbing
  • Finished the back porch repair (see photo above)
Here is a photo of the finished bathroom sinks...
We still have left to:
  • Tile the stairway, floor, and around the tub
  • Paint one more room
  • Order and Install handrails for the stairs
  • Install doors and trim
  • Install toilet
  • Hook up the electricity and connect the dots inside
  • Paint exterior walls
UPDATE! 03/2013
I've been working a lot lately on trying to get the shower/tub done upstairs.  We still have not been able to get the floor tile done, but the shower is done and we're happy about that!  Here's a pic...
