EL RETO 2008 (week 2)

Eleven more students came out to participate this week making a total of 68 students who have participated in EL RETO this year! We are excited about the number of different students who have a chance to hear about God’s Word and learn practical ways to overcome life’s difficulties.

We started this week out with each team captain sharing a devotional with their team. This is a great opportunity for the captains to gain experience sharing God’s Word and applying it to EL RETO. To see the students involved in this is something that excites me a lot!

One of the challenges for this year is choreography to a musical track that has no words. To make it even more challenging, they have to make up their own words. This is definitely going to be an adventure for some. They will present it at the FINAL RETO on September 27. We gave them some time this week to practice their choreographies at the beginning of the meeting.

Gollito practicing one of his moves for the choreography.
While they were doing this, we had a separate challenge for them individually as groups; Deal or No Deal. One by one, the teams came into a room with me where I hooked up to a Deal or No Deal game on the internet. The team that made a deal for the most money won this game, immunity of chores, and left first on their second race of the year. The winners were The Messengers making a deal for $72,000 while their briefcase unfortunately had the $1,000,000! The next place was all the way down to $10,000. Last place, $75! It was fun and exciting as they had to make decisions of whether or not to continue with the risk or take the deal given to them.

The winning team!
After All the teams had played, they received a note that told them they needed to go to the baseball field for their next activity. They had to round the bases and accomplish a task at each base in order to advance. To get to first base they needed to enter “Penny Wars”; which is a separate challenge where each team fills a bottle with change. Each coin has a point value and in the end, we use this money for the winning team’s prize.
In order to advance to second base, they needed to learn a tongue twister and say it, once they accomplished that; they needed to learn my handshake in order to advance to third.

Watch the video here with Angel and Mili...

At third base, each person on their team had to eat one huge marshmallow in order to advance to Home.

At Home, they got a note telling them to go to the bridge between Cofradía and Arrayanes with one of the staff members. They had to walk, run, or hitch a ride. Unfortunately, we ended up giving them all rides because we were running short on time for the event that was to take place in Arrayanes.
Arriving at the bridge.
Once they reached the bridge, they arrived at a fork in the road with a sign that said, “Tierra o Mar” (Land or Water). If they chose land, they had to memorize a series of symbols, cross the bridge, and put those symbols in the same order as they were on the other side. If they couldn’t remember, they had to go back and forth until they got it right. Two teams chose “Land” and paid for it.

If they chose “Water”, they had to go down the hill to the edge of the river, memorize a number, cross the river, and write down the number on a piece of paper on the other side. The four teams to choose “Water” chose well and arrived at the final destination about a half an hour before the other two teams.
The Fearful, running down the hill.

Now, to cross the river!

Arriving on the other side.
The final destination was the church in Arrayanes where we played a RETO classic called “Gladiators”. This was the third year we played this game and the first time we were actually able to figure out how to score it sensibly. Each team had the same amount of players run through the maze (a first) and the team throwing water balloons got one point for every time they hit someone (modified) and one point for every person of the other teams who did not make it through the maze (a first). It was a real good time!

When the game was over, we all went back to Cofradía for “The Valley of Decision”.
"The Valley of Decision"
This week instead of asking a series of questions, each team had to vote for another team to do chores. This is just like Tribal Council in the program Survivor. Each team, one by one, had to go into a room where I was, write the name of a different team on a piece of paper, and quietly return to their formation outside.
The vote box.
There was one team, The Messengers, who received immunity from the vote because they won Deal or No Deal. This was REALLY COOL!!! I did everything I could to try to keep a straight face. Once all the votes were cast, I walked out with the box, back to where I normally stand, and read the votes, one by one…just like on Survivor. The team that received the most votes was, conveniently named, “The Chosen”.
"The Eagles" showing their vote for "The Chosen" who were sent to do chores.
They also received the first two clues to where the treasure was hidden after they finished doing their chore which was to sweep the area where they played Gladiators and pick up all the garbage.
Gaby sweeping up the garbage.

EL RETO UNCOVERED: Opportunities abound in EL RETO for personal growth. Many have faced many challenges already, including me. As I mentioned last week, I need to work on my delegation skills. I think I did a little better; however, sometimes working with people can be a little difficult (I can hear some of you say, “Duh”). One of the big things for me is trustworthiness. I need to be able to count on someone to do their job and be where they need to be when they need to be there. This flows into all 52 weeks of the year with this ministry. I believe that one of the motivating factors in being trustworthy is taking ownership. I absolutely love it when people take ownership of what they’re doing, this is something I saw this week and I really appreciated it.

On another note, one of our team captains had a huge struggle this week. At the very beginning of the event, only himself and two other people from his team showed up on time. All the others were working on their new flag (this was the team that needed to rename themselves). He told them to come, I told them to come. They did not listen. There was an incredible lack of respect for the team captain and he was brought to tears as the frustration level rose. So, he decided to go home and no longer participate in EL RETO. He was definitely facing a challenge of his own, one that I’ve lived through with the same people he’s dealing with. I talked with the team; they decided to stay together and hopefully some of them become aware of their individual selfishness. The theme is “Decide Your Destiny.” The captain decided his destiny with the individuals he chose to be on his team. The team decided their destiny when they chose a borderline blasphemous name, it was bound for destruction. I am convinced that God is orchestrating ALL of the events that go on during EL RETO, not just on the weekends, but during the week as well. I had the opportunity to talk individually with a number of the team members and for the most part they understood the consequences of their decisions. There are a couple of members that are semi-new to the youth group and I was a little concerned for them. Needless to say, deep down, they wanted to quit. I don’t blame them. As I shared with them some of the ways we can learn from this, they were encouraged to continue. Later on, I was able to talk to the team captain who decided that he was not going to participate anymore and tried to help him see the big picture. In reality, this is life. Life is a CHALLENGE. I shared with him some of my own experiences with similar situations and let him know that what he is living is real life and it will continue throughout his life. Right now would be a great opportunity to learn how to deal with these kinds of things. As God calls him into ministry as a leader, this will not be the first time he encounters “opposition”. I left him with something to think about: give up, or get up. He can give up and be overcome by the situation which has potential for learning nothing. Or, he could get up, dust himself off and face the Giant in his life. He listened to what I had to say and my prayer is that he will take it to heart and be able to learn some real life applications through this. He’s a real good kid!

By the way, the team’s new name is “Angeles Del Bien” Angels of Good.

What a tough week!

EL RETO 2008 "DECIDE YOUR DESTINY" (week 1)

El RETO (The CHALLENGE) has begun and the students are amped! This year they will “Decide (their) Destiny” through a series of Survivor/Amazing Race/Fear Factor-style challenges throughout September. There are six teams; they receive points for showing up, bringing new students, finishing races faster than other teams, encouragement, and many more ways. Its fun, it’s long, and it’s a CHALLENGE!

The first week we had 56 students show up to start the event. Each team captain had a week to recruit their teams and can still add students throughout the event. After sharing about the theme for this year, we introduced the staff and the teams chose colors.

The Staff

We added a “Ceremony of the Colors” this year instead of asking each team captain what color they would like. We injected paint into an egg shell and they threw it at a piece of plywood that has the words, “EL RETO 2008 DECIDE YOUR DESTINY” on it. One by one, the team Captains grabbed their egg-shell that Mili was holding for them and whatever color splattered on the board, was the color of their team.

The teams are:
Aguilas “Eagles” Leader: Luis Aguilar from Ruiz

Los Elegidos “The Chosen” Leader: Rubén Garzón from Arrayanes

Los Mensajeros “The Messengers” Leader: Cecilia Pérez from Santa Fé
Los Temerosos “The Fearful” (towards God) Leader: Gregorio Hernandez from Cofradía
Los Vencedores “The Overcomers” Leader: Pedro Salaiza from Cofradía
(_________) The green team has been asked to change their name. Leader: Julio Hernández from Cofradía.

After choosing their names and presenting their team flags to everyone, they started a race that required them to make a number of decisions…

The first thing they had to do was to count all of the EXTERIOR doors that are on the mission base (27). Once they came to me with the correct answer, they had to choose one of 6 vehicles to take them to their next destination. However, they needed to find the vehicle first. Each vehicle was located in a different area of the town, some close; some far away and there was a riddle that led them to where their truck was waiting.

At the truck, they had to decide what town they wanted to go to; Las Pilas or Paso Real. In order to get to Cofradía from the Interstate, you have to go through both of these towns first; they’re pretty close.

If they chose the closer town, Las Pilas, they had to get a clue that was in a balloon floating in the water.
(The Eagles running towards the pond to get their balloon)
The clue directed them to find a new member for their team from that town. With their new member, they would receive points and immunity from having to do chores during the week. When they finished, they had to keep their new member with them until the race was finished. Their next stop would be to go to Paso Real and do the same thing that they would do if they would have chosen that town in the beginning. In other words, choosing Las Pilas was a detour that took them off the path to Paso Real. This is much like sin in our life; it takes us off the path of righteousness and distracts us from doing what is right. We loose time. There were three teams that chose Las Pilas and one brought a new member for their team from Las Pilas and was immune from chores.

For the other three teams that chose Paso Real, they just got their before the other teams. At the entrance of the town, they had to decide between something physical and something mental. Again, it was split three-three.
(Mati and Mari waiting at the entrance of Paso Real)
For those who chose something physical, they had to run to the baseball field and as a team walk about 20 yards on two pieces of wood. This required coordination and communication in the team.
("left, right...")
("left, right...")

("left, right...")
When they were done, they were to fill up a garbage bag and take it to the center of town to throw it in the garbage can where they would receive their next clue that took them to their final destination…the new church in Cofradía.
For the three teams who chose something mental, they got a ride to the center of town and had to put together a brain teaser.
("So, what colors go where?")
Once they finished that activity, they also had to fill up a garbage bag and put it in the garbage can to receive their next clue that took them to their final destination…the new church in Cofradía.

As they arrived, the three teams that chose not to go to Las Pilas arrived first, and then the other three came in.

We had everyone wait outside before opening the doors for the Final Challenge of the day. Last year, we called it the Final Challenge, but this year, it is called “The Valley of Decision”. In the Bible (Joel 3), The Valley of Decision is marked as a place of judgment where a decision is made about our destiny based upon who we serve.
Our Valley of Decision in EL RETO, decides what team will do the chores during the week (something they see as punishment). After a series of questions amongst the forced silence on the students and the soundtrack of The Passion of Christ in the background, the team that answered the most questions incorrectly was the team that got chosen to do chores.
(The tention builds as night falls)
(Fermin comes forward as he is the one chosen to answer the question for his team's DESTINY).
Oddly enough, the team chosen was the only team who was immune from chores. As we finished, they received a note that told them to choose two other teams to help them with the chores. Since they were immune, only the two other teams had to work. What was the work? Cleaning the dirty, muddy tents from camp a month ago. Both teams showed up on Sunday afternoon to clean the tents and they lost points for each member who was not there.
(Ruben's team was one of the two chosen)
(Chuy is making sure the inside is clean!)
This year we have something else that is new called EL TESORO, or THE TREASURE. There is a hidden treasure somewhere around these parts and I will not say where because some of the students might read this (some can read English). If you have seen the show Survivor, this is just like the “Hidden Immunity Idol” with clues to its whereabouts. In the end, this treasure will allow them to challenge the team that has the most points at the very end of the event on September 27. There will be a challenge between those two teams to determine the winner of EL RETO 2008. Maybe as the month goes on, I’ll put some clues in these reports!?!?

This is a lot of fun, a lot of work, and filled with opportunities for everyone to grow. I am already being challenged in certain areas of my leadership where I know need to get better. One is DELEGATION. I’m learning and thank you for your prayers.

OOPS!

A few days ago, we had to take Pony to the vet. We weren't sure what exactly might have happened to him as he fought with the car. Just a broken leg, it could have been worse! So, this is something that we need to get used to. A family pet that you can barely see! Notice that he's the same color as our tile floor! Watch your step! smile:)

New Family Member

Yesterday we went to Mazatlan to see some friends and pick up our new family member, Pony. Our friends Noe and Martha Espinoza gave Rebecka a little "dear head" Chihuahua that will be only two months old next week! Both of the girls are really excited and Rebecka is mothering him very well!

ELECTRICITY

Well, we've had an interesting year with our electricity. I remember 10+ years ago the electricity problems we used to have. The power would go out and not return for many time at least 24 hours. The past few years have been pretty good with hardly ever having to use a generator. Now, these past three to four weeks or so, we're lucky to go three days without the power going out. Last night the power went out again around 8pm during our youth service. Praise the Lord that everything we had plugged in was on the only line that was working of the three that come in to town, so our service never got interrupted (this was an answer to prayer by the way--as I was walking up to the church from the house, I noticed the dark clouds which usually means rain and no electricity coming our way. I prayed that the Lord would not allow the electricity to go out and that's what happened!).

This afternoon we received power again around 4pm. Our house did not have power in either line that it's connected to. We will be looking for a generator when we go back to the states. Does anyone have one they need to get rid of?

Thank you for your continued prayers.

WATER

After over a month of having NO WATER, we finally got water last night! It's pretty dirty, but it's wet! We are very thankful!

Now, our prayer is that the electricity would come back on!

Ministry...be watching for updates on this year's RETO with the youth. We start THIS WEEK!

SUMMER YOUTH CAMP

“Kosechando Destinos” (Harvesting Destinies) is the name of the camp and the theme this year was “Rebels WITH a Cause.” It turned out very interesting because for the past couple of months there has been a strange rebellious atmosphere amongst our students. It was as if the Lord was preparing some of our students for the messages during the four days at camp. To God’s glory, all twenty of our youth who attended were touched one way or another; healings, prophecies, Spiritual gifts manifested and most evident was the presence of God right there! Many have said that this was the best camp they’ve ever been to! Praise the Lord!

This year we took the opportunity of having two of our student leaders be “mom and dad” to the other 18 students. It was definitely a step forward for them to grow in their responsibility and they know we trust them with the group. Many people were praying and some were even fasting for God to work in the students’ lives, and He did. No one caused any problems, even the ones who said they went to cause trouble. God stirred their hearts as He had something else in store for them.

Camp started on a Tuesday evening in the middle of nowhere about 1 ½ hours north of Mazatlán—five hours away from here! There were 130 students in total and they really started opening up to the Lord by Thursday night. One of the Pastors spoke directly at one of our students during a service and told him that he’d been rejected and hurt and that he has held a grudge against those people and God. The student looked at him in awe, wondering how in the world he knew, then, as the speaker began to pray for him, he HIT the floor and started to weep uncontrollably as the Lord healed his hurt and began to restore relationships that had been broken.

One of the really neat things that happen each year at camp is that on the last evening as they finish, the parents of the students come and are part of the service. After the ministry time, there is ministry and reconciliation time amongst the parents and their children. What an awesome sight! Parents and youth weeping in each other’s arms; it’s unfortunate that our students don’t get this opportunity because we live so far away. So, the Sunday after everyone got back, the pastor gave us an opportunity to “relive” the moment. As the students stood before the congregation, their parents came forward to give them hugs and a ministry of reconciliation was happening all over again, it was powerful!

Please pray for the continued fervor to be spread amongst the whole youth group.
Our Worship Band got another opportunity this year to lead worship at one of the meetings.
Fun in Praise!
Seeing this makes me want to worship right along with them!

Youth Summer Speed Soccer Tournament

WITH PHOTOS!!!
This year we had another 25 guys form 5 teams for the summer tournament. Just like all the other tournaments, the finals were the most exciting and nail-biting. The five teams were lead by three student leaders and two others who are very good at soccer and have leadership skills. Chuy was the captain for the black team, “Juventus”; Cheche was the captain of the pink team, “Los Panteras Rosas”—the Pink Panthers; Martin was the captain of the white team, “Los Bufalos”—the Buffalos; Julio was the captain of the blue team, “Chelsea”; and Jose Angel was the captain of the orange team, “La Naranja Mecanica”—the Orange Mechanic. Despite having one of their players not present the day of the finals, “Chelsea” won a wild-card game for the #4 seed, then went on to beat the #1 seed “Juventus” to make it to the championship game. “The Pink Panthers” also made it to the championship game coming from the #3 seed and beat “Chelsea” 4-3 in an intense overtime game. So the winning team of the Summer Speed Soccer Tournament—The Pink Panthers!!

It was a great week and an excellent opportunity for the team captains to speak into the lives of their team members. Each week they prayed together before their games and there were a few new students introduced to our youth group. As we develop relationships with these students, we pray that the Lord will open doors for us to minister to them.

There’s more…

For the first time after having had three tournaments already, we had 7 girls turn out for a quick girl’s tournament. Mili was the team captain for “Las Damas de Negro”—Women in Black; Cecilia was the team captain for “Las Campeonas”—The Champions, made up of three girls. Was it prophetic? It appears to be that way because the team of three, “The Champions” came out on top winning the best – of – seven four games and only tying the “Women in Black” once at the beginning. Again, there were a few girls from Santa Fe who were introduced to our youth group through this event and we trust that the Lord will open more opportunities to develop relationships with them and share more of Jesus with them.

News

I'm working on getting some updates done for the past month. It's been a little difficult to write, but there's been some good things happening this past week amongst the youth. We were in Sinaloa at a youth camp and the Lord touched all 20 students that we took. It was an amazing time. I'll try to post something about the past month shortly. Thank you for your continued prayers, they are much needed!
