Some people are, how do I say this with love, hopeless in the rythm departement. I do believe you can teach it though. I've taught this keeping a steady tempo:
*"one-two-three-four" all downstrokes on the guitar with the right hand is a good start.
*"one-and-two-and-three-and-four-and" to teach a basic "down-up" (with the right hand) strumming pattern.
There are variations of "one-and-two-and..." that can be taught as well. Anything to get them strumming down first. Down, up, down, up...
Thanks, Jeff. Yes, it does help. I have been able to do this with some success with the guitar. However, two of the members in our band (brothers) are struggling quite a bit (to say it with love). One plays the bass and the other plays the keyboard. I don't play either one, but I've been learning a little. They still are struggling (after a year) to get where I'm at and I don't even know how to play them.
I'm trying to get the bass player to play the beat fo the drum with one note, one finger at time. The piano player just doesn't know how to count to four I think. He gets confused in the middle of a song, then starts hitting chords where they shouldn't be. Any suggestions for the bass and piano??
Sunday, just before church, I saw the need to help our bass player...he was really struggling with a section of one of the songs. I sat down with him, showed him what to do, and he did it! I was really impressed!
