APRIL UPDATE

GREETINGS from Cofradía, Mexico!  We pray that all is well with everyone and thank you very much for your prayers!  We really appreciate them!

Last month, we asked you to pray for...

  • EL RETO Training in Sinaloa We had a great time with the pastors and leaders in La Cruz, Sinaloa teaching them how to organize a RETO (Challenge) outreach for the youth in their church and community.   Youth Pastors Sergio and Edith were absolute sponges and we spent two full days talking with them about the event.  On Saturday evening, we held an orientation for their pastors and leaders and included some RETO activities for them.  It was very exciting, here’s the report.
  • Men’s Mission trip to Oaxaca In the end, only 4 of the 12 men could go due to the lack of finances.  Those four men started their journey last Monday (March 25) and returned to Cofradia Tuesday morning (April 2).  Thank you for your prayers during their trip.  I have posted an update here.

This month, will you please pray for...

  • Children’s Ministry Evangelization Tour Our Children’s Ministry will be traveling to different towns during the week playing games, singing songs, performing dramas, sharing stories, and working on crafts with other children.  Pray for boldness, impact, and that the children would grow through this.  Here’s their schedule:
    • Tuesday, April 2 in Arrayanes
    • Wednesday, April 3 in Las Pilas
    • Thursday, April 4 in Santa Fe
    • Friday, April 5 in Agua Aceda
    • Saturday in Cofradia
    • Sunday in Church service
  • Discipleship Group Last year four of us started Greg Ogden’s discipleship manual, Discipleship Essentials, and continued with other men as the book suggests.  This has been very, very helpful to all 15 men who have participated.  This week, my group (Pastor Luis, Max, Chuy, and myself), will be finishing up and looking towards opening up more groups.  Thank you for your prayers over the men and youth of the church.
  • Evangelism in Las Pilas Our church body will be going to the town of Las Pilas for an open-air evangelistic outreach.  Pray for openness and that the message would have a lasting effect on the peoples’ lives. (April 10)
  • Emma’s 7th Birthday April 10
  • AM Cofradia Staff Max Diaz will be temporarily returning to Guadalajara to be with his children.  It has been an exciting time with him here.  He has helped quite a bit with media and sound, youth ministry, and the church in general.  Max is a true servant who is willing to do anything to help people.  His enthusiasm will be missed during this time, but his impact will last.  Please pray for him as the Lord guides him as a father and leader.
  • EL RETO LA CRUZ will begin on May 4.

Thank you very much for partnering with us through your prayers and financial support.

FEBRUARY UPDATE

GREETINGS from Cofradía, Mexico!  We are in an exciting time right now in this ministry.  God has been touching so many lives.  Every week we are seeing new local people visit.  This last Sunday there was a comment from a visitor, “what are you guys going to do once this place fills up, because it’s going to fill up!”  This is a good problem as we set out 160 chairs each Sunday.

Our family is doing well, everyone is healthy and Mackenzie is growing fast.  She is a very good and happy baby.

Last time, we asked you to pray for...

This month, will you please pray for...

  • Doug and Jan Taylor Conference Once again, former staff members will be returning to hold a weekend conference speaking to our leaders, congregation, and married couples.  Pray for accurate interpreting and open hearts to the Word of God.  People are always blessed when the Taylors come (Feb. 8-10).
  • Date Night We’ll be hosting a Date Night on February 10 with the Taylors as guest speakers.  All married couples are invited.  Many people have expressed interest, even the visitors and other people from town.  Please pray for open hearts to God’s Word and that not only many marriages will begin a process of transformation, but individuals a well (February 10).
  • Pastor Mariano Riscajche We, along with the other pastors of the region, will be hosting a huge Evangelical event in Tuxpan, Nayarit with guest speaker, Pastor Mariano Riscajche from Almolonga, Guatemala.  Some of you may have heard of this town that was transformed by the gospel a few years back and is now exporting exaggeratingly huge fruits and vegetables from this land.  We are expecting great things to happen!  Please pray for healings and transformed lives throughout the region.  Pray for wisdom for the ushers.  Pray for travel safety for everyone, including Pastor Riscajche.  Pray that God will be glorified (February 15).  Google for more information on Pastor Mariano Riscajche and Almolonga, Guatemala.  It is known as the “Miracle City.”
  • First Cofradia Youth Wedding I have the privilege of marrying the first young couple in the church where both are from Cofradía and have not yet begun to live together.  Please pray for a smooth service and that Jesús and Cinthia have a God-honoring marriage (February 17).
  • Church’s 2nd Anniversary We will be celebrating our 2nd Anniversary as a church meeting in the new building.  It will be an exciting time as we have special guest speaker, Pastor Gregorio Hernández, all the way from Cofradía—yay! (February 24).
  • EL RETO Training in Sinaloa Pray for a smooth time of teaching as I will be training a church in La Cruz, Sinaloa on how to reach students for Christ through a “Challenge” event (March 2).
  • Men’s Mission trip to Oaxaca A group of 12 men in the church are going to Oaxaca on a Missions trip where they will be helping another church through teachings and some light construction.  Please pray for finances for these men as $3000 pesos is very hard to come by in this area.  If you would like to make a general donation, please click here and specify it for Cofradia Men (March 25 – April 2).

July Update

Greetings Everyone from Cofradía Mexico!  It’s cooling down a bit now that the rains have finally come.  However, with that, comes more humidity...Praise the Lord!  :).  Thank you for your prayers this past month, we really, really appreciate them!  There have been a lot of exciting things happening, but one that was a nice surprise is the paving of the road into Cofradía.  It’s been paved before, but never like this, it even has painted lines!!!

This past month we asked for your prayers concerning...

  • Transition Things are going well as we near the hump of the transition.  Dave and Kathy will be leaving in just a couple of weeks.  Thanks for your continued prayers for our staff as well as the Elias’ as they begin a new chapter as well.
  • Sandy Garzon has joined our Missionary Staff and is receiving support from people like you.  Thank you for praying for her and her needs.
  • Our Personal Support we still have not received any pledges since our home church has made a commitment to match them in order to help us reach our goal.  Please continue to pray about how you can help.
  • Mily Garzon is in Oaxaca, she made it safely and is doing well.  She will be there for two months and possibly an extended amount of time.
  • Short-Term Missions teams Canyon Hills from Bothel, WA is here and doing a great job building relationships with our students and children.  The outreach in Pilas on Thursday drew the best response we’ve ever seen.  Here is a quick update of their time here

June Update

Greetings Everyone from Cofradía Mexico!  We had a great time last weekend (May 27-30) in Sinaloa.  Our family went to Mazatlan on Friday and we stayed the night at a hotel as we had promised the girls a trip to the beach since last April.  Well, they were more excited about the pool than the beach...we only saw the beach, didn’t even touch the sand!  They loved their time there!  The next day we went to the wedding of one of our students who married a girl from Mazatlan.  We are very proud of them for setting a good example.  You can see their picture here.  Sunday I spoke in the two services of Cosecha Final La Cruz church with my friend, Pastor Héctor Robles.  It was a great blessing to be part of their services and see what God is doing there.  Soon, our students will be attending camp there at the end of July.  Monday, we headed back home.

Last month we asked for your prayers concerning...

  • Alternative Missions Staff “as we work through a transitional period.”  Dave and Kathy Elias have been in Mexico for over 20 years with most of their time here in Cofradía.  They have felt a call to return to their home in Canada.  Dave is the Area Director of Alternative Missions Cofradía and both of them have a big influence in many areas.  To fill their shoes is a huge task and something that our whole Missionary Staff and the Church body will need to work together in order to step up and take over responsibilities.  I have already been appointed as the new Area Director and we are moving forward in a positive way with this transition.  We are excited about what God can do through this, yet sad that the Elias’ will be leaving.  July 20 is their departure date.
  • Pastor Gollo “for wisdom as he guides the church, it’s leaders, and the home groups that meet during the week.”  I was at a leadership meeting that Pastor Gollo held last night and the energy for being positive, strong leaders was very present.  He is doing an excellent job, the home groups are going well, and the Cofradía church is moving forward.  We have some quality people!
  • Sandy Garzon will be joining our staff on June 23.  She has written a support letter that you can see here.  We are so excited about this new addition to our staff as she will be working with Short-Term Mission teams, helping with the administration of the church, and living on the Mission Base as a caretaker.
  • Our Personal Support We have not received a response since last month’s update concerning our monthly support.  Here is what we wrote about it, “A few months ago we were seeking to raise our support $600 a month and asked you to give towards our immediate need of Health Insurance.  Many of you have given and others have started to faithfully donate each month and we thank you very much for that.  We are still short of our goal by around $200 of monthly pledges.  My home church, Gateway Fellowship, has generously made a commitment to match $1 for every $2 of pledges to help us finish reaching our goal.  Please let us know by responding to this email about how you can help us reach our goal.”

JANUARY UPDATE

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Blessings to all of you for 2010!! 2009 was a good year. We saw our Student Ministry continue to grow in maturity as the Leaders took charge of many different events. One of the neatest things is to see them ministering and reaching out to other students as they lead them in Bible Studies and take one on one time to mentor them. Two major events last year that our student leaders led were;
  • A Missions Trip to Oaxaca. This was the first trip that our students went on as a team. They were blessed as they were blessing others in a small town outside of the city of Oaxaca that does not have a Christian church. They were able to minister to about 20 youth during that time. Click here to read more.
  • EL RETO (The Challenge) This was a huge step for our leaders. It is the biggest event of the year and they did a great job of organizing and follow-though. It attracts many students who never get to hear the gospel and they have fun while doing it. I gave a link in last month’s update, if you didn’t get a chance to read it you can click here.
Last month, we asked for your prayers concerning...
  • Knee Injury A HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who sent donations for the surgery. My knee is getting better and is healing up quickly. I will be on crutches at least for a couple more weeks. I have posted a few things on our blog, click here for the latest.
  • Youth Volleyball and Speed Soccer Tournaments For a whole week the students played volleyball and soccer. New Year’s Day was the finals. Not many youth came out from other towns, but more new faces from Cofradía participated. Congratulations to Pedro’s team who won in Volleyball and Riky’s team who won in Soccer. Click here for a more full report.
Are you going to be visiting in Mexico? If you have plans to come to either Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, or Guadalajara, let us know. We are within 4 hours of all three of those cities with Mazatlán being the closest (3 hours). We’d love to show you around Cofradía so you can get a taste of this Mexican countryside!

This month, would you please pray for...
  • Cy-Fair Christian Church Women’s Team The women in our church really enjoy having these women come down. They have made a great impact in the past, let’s pray for that to continue. (Jan. 9-16)
  • A trip to the Mountains. A few of our youth are going up to the mountains to the Cora village of Cangrejo where they will be handing out Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. This is a great opportunity to reach that community and people group. Pray for safe travels and a warm welcome. (Jan. 29,30)
  • Student Leadership Conference. Each year the youth pastors of Cy-Fair come to lead a conference with our youth and help prepare for the team of youth they will bring in March. We look forward to this time to hear from Pastors Mike and Dave. (Feb. 4-8)
  • Worship Ministry. Please pray for a continued maturity in our worship band. I have poured my life into the student ministry and things are going very well. I would like to focus more attention to the band and help the leaders gain confidence and learn to depend on the Lord for leading. Please continue to pray for strong worship leaders. My goal is to have others leading quality true worship.
Thank you very much for your prayers and continued support.

APRIL UPDATE

Greetings everyone!  It’s May and the sun is out!!!  A big THANK YOU to all of you who have been following our ministry as you cover us in your prayers.  We really appreciate it!!

Last month, we asked you to pray for…
  • Oaxaca Missions Trip We had a great time!  The traveling went really smooth; the Holy Spirit protected us; not only were the hearts of the youth open to the Gospel, but the adults and children as well; our Student Leaders did a phenominal job leading a Sunday Home group, a leadership workshop during the week and the evening outreach called, “EL RETO.”  This was our first missions trip as a youth ministry and we all came home with something to ponder on and help us grow spiritually.  Thank You for keeping us in your prayers!  I have put together a full report here.
Other things that have happened this past month were
  • Emma’s third birthday
  • a visit from Geña’s family from California
  • all four of us getting sick at the same time (we’re better now)
  • a Guy’s Campout led by one of our Student Leaders
  • Since joining Facebook in March, I have enjoyed keeping in touch with many of you and reconnecting with many other friends.  If you’re on Facebook, click on my profile to the right and let me know.
The invitation will always be available for those of you who would like to come down with a team or just for a visit and experience the Real Mexico.

Oaxaca Report

Twelve of us set out on Friday April 3 at 1pm for a 24 hour drive to Oaxaca City.  Our purpose was to help missionaries Jeffrey and Sylvia Simons start up a youth ministry in an un-churched Zapotec Indigenous village called San Juan Guelavía, located thirty minutes outside the city.  As a team we wanted to “Serve, Give, and Connect.”  That was on our mind the whole time we were there, and our students did a great job of serving the Lord, the ministry, the missionaries, and the youth of San Juan Guelavía;  they did an excellent job of giving themselves to be used by the Lord and useful to the people; and they had a lot of fun connecting with others and made friends with students who don’t know Jesus.

Missionaries, Jeffrey and Sylvia Simons and Kaleb and Gracie (above).

Here are some pics of the Zapotec people in the day-to-day lives (below).

Saturday night we were able to spend some time in the historic downtown plaza.  Oaxaca is overwhelmingly full of culture and history.  We had our first taste of culture with the Oaxaca “tlayuda” (a huge flower tortilla with beans and anything else you want on it).

The next morning we shared at the Simons church, Torre Fuerte (Strong Tower). This church is involved in ministering to San Juan Guelavía on Sunday nights with a Home Group.  We got to share about how God is moving in our student ministry and why it is so important to intentionally minister to the younger generations, and we invited their youth to join us during the week to participate in the outreach activities.  That evening we went out to the village and met the people we have been reading about and covering in praying for a couple of months now.  Many of the families represented in the Home Group are receiving support from the government and the church in order to get a one room house to live in...the Judge called it a dream come true for many of them.  We would be working with one of them in the mornings for the next three days.

Our host family in San Juan Guelavia.

We were told to be careful with our Christian jargon because of the testimony of previous Missionary groups who have come to town to try to convert them.  As a result, they place Christians in the same disdainful category as Politicians and Drug Traffickers. Our goal was to minimize our “christianese” ways so as to prevent any further barriers from going up among the people. Right before we arrived at the home were the meeting was to be, a drunk man with a couple rocks in his hands came up to Jeffrey as he had just gotten into the van and sternly asked hum what his purpose was for being there.  After a few moments of Jeffrey calmly talking to the man, he apologized and told him, “I can see in your eyes that you come with good intentions.”

At the Home Group, we found out that the host is the Judge of the town and in charge of overseeing the house-building project that the government and church are helping with.  Most of the people who were present were people who are receiving help with their homes.  Many of them were Christians.  During the study, three of our students led a Bible story with the children while another student, Martin, shared the Word with the adults.  He shared about the two men who built homes -- one on the sand and the other on a rock -- and did a great job of connecting with the people because that is exactly what was on their minds!  By the way, he did not know about this beforehand.

Home Group and children's class pics...

Our schedule was basically the same for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  In the mornings our team split into two; a group of guys went to do some construction and our Student Leadership team led a Leadership Workshop with some of the more involved youth in San Juan Guelavía and a few others who came in from the Oaxaca City Church, Torre Fuerte (Strong Tower).

The Leadership Workshop was well done.  They spent the first day talking about the importance of having a personal devotion life with Jesus as being the foundation of our leadership.  The next day, they talked about service and set the example by washing the students’ feet.  The third morning they put into practice their service as a team, and we poured a floor in a room that was built for a family in need.  The construction team spent Monday and Tuesday preparing for the pour.

Leadership Workshop...Day One (above).

Pouring the floor (below).

In the evenings, we wanted to connect with the youth from San Juan Guelavía through what we’ve done in Cofradía: EL RETO.  Monday was dedicated to getting to know each other and finding their team identities by choosing names from Bible stories.  One team used the story of creation, calling themselves “Creation.”  Another team used the story of David and Goliath, calling themselves “La Onda” which is a play on words: it means “The Sling” and also slang for something similar to “Happening” (usually used to ask “What’s up?” as well as refer to understanding what’s going on or a person who is deservedly well-liked).  The final team used the story of Abraham’s calling, choosing to call themselves “Abraham’s Descendants”, which was another play on words since their team leader’s name was Abraham.

"Creation"

"La Onda"

"Abraham's Descendants"

Each evening we had an event similar to pin the tail on the donkey where they had to tape together a whole body searching for the wall blindfolded and following the directions shouted by their team members.  The first day focused on the head with eyes, nose, mouth, and ears.  The next day was the torso with arms and hands, and the final day was the legs and feet.  After this was all finished, Luis shared a short message on how we are all part of one body and need each other.

Each evening also had a “Final Challenge” which determined some sort of punishment for the loosing team.  Monday night was “King of the Circle.”  It ended with one of our students winning, but because he had stepped on the line he was actually out.  We gave a trophy to Francisco from San Juan Guelavía who was the runner-up.

Francisco (left) is a young man that is struggling with a number of difficulties, and everyone was happy to see him participate, especially his Aunt and Uncle who hosted us.

On Tuesday we had a number of active games such as the Olympics with javelin (toothpick), discus (paper plate), and shot put (balloon) events.  The winner of each of the three events also won a medal.  Following the Olympics event, we had relay races and brain teasers to keep it exciting.

Wednesday was the finals, and after a devotional by Luis, the #2 (Abraham’s Descendants) and #3 (Creation) teams participated in a balloon launch activity.  They had to throw a water balloon onto a bulls eye about 20 yards away, and they received a certain amount of points depending on where they hit.  Their team leader from Cofradía was standing at the top of the bulls eye, and they got even more points if they hit them!

Abraham’s Descendants won and played the finals with the #1 team (La Onda) in a nose blowing contest: they had to stick an M&M in their nostril and try to shoot it into a bucket.

The team that made the most shots won EL RETO.  Congratulations to...La Onda!

Thursday was our tourist day as Jeffrey took us up to see some ruins called Monte Alban and spent the afternoon downtown.
Monte Albán
The Central Market downtown Oaxaca.
That evening we had a great debriefing time with our students, and it was really neat to hear how God spoke into some of their lives.  Here are a few testimonies of what they had to say about the trip...

Abraham's Testimony

English:

Hello!

My name is Abraham Isaac and I want to share with you some of the many things that God did in my life when I was in Oaxaca.

I am thankful to God because He has always been faithful and because He provided everything I needed in order to go on the trip.

Also, I am impacted to see how God puts together everything; because on the road while we were driving through some of the cities, sometimes we didn’t know which way to go, we weren’t familiar with the roads, but God used some people we didn’t know to help guide us so that we can find the roads that led to Oaxaca.  He kept us safe all the way to Oaxaca and back.

When we arrived, missionaries Jeffrey and Sylvia welcomed us and it was a pleasure to be able to get to know them, they are a good example for us and I thank God for their lives.

Also, the days that we were in San Juan Guelavia were a huge blessing.  The first day we arrived at a house of a family that welcomed us with open doors.  They are such nice people and I was impressed to see the friendly way that they served us; they were very happy to have us in their home.

In addition, this family loaned us their house so that we could do “THE CHALLENGE.”  That was a great blessing because when we first arrived we didn’t have any idea of where we would do “the challenge.”  I’m thankful to God that this family was willing to loan us their house.

“THE CHALLENGE’ was an activity that many of the youth in Oaxaca enjoyed.  I even heard someone say, “I’ve never seen games like these”.  For me, the challenge was really cool because I got to meet new teenagers, new people, etc.

I believe we were able to complete our objective of “Serve, Give, and Connect” and all of this happened thanks to God.

I was also privileged to be able to participate helping pour a floor in a house of one of the families there.  They were living without a floor and I believe we were a great blessing to them.

During my stay in Oaxaca I had a good experience because I was able to try some typical foods they have there, some I have never tried before.  The city is also very beautiful, the people of Oaxaca are very kind, the landscapes that we saw on the drive was really cool.  There are a lot more things that I could say about what I experienced in Oaxaca but it would take me a few more pages to write them all down.  This is why this is “some” of the all the things that I learned there.

It was a great experience and I hope to return some day.

Español:

Hola!

English:

What I liked best.

God did great things in Oaxaca. One of them was that he attracted youth for the CHALLENGE, and I think that for God nothing is impossible. Another thing was that I saw how the people of San Juan Guelavía treated us with such love and respect. they never deceived, and they always supported us in all the activities of the CHALLENGE. They never got annoyed; on the contrary, they rejoiced over having us there. Those three days were so cool, not just in my life but also in the lives of the others. I think that God had a great impact on that town, and what God taught me is that it doesn’t matter if you win or lose but rather that you have fun and enjoy those moments that you are living. When I arrived at that town, I thought that there wouldn’t be enough youth to make the teams, but I prayed to God asking him to bring in more youth not just for my team but also for the other two. And the next day my team was the one with the most people. In that moment I thought “God is big and He can do anything,” and I think that God will continue to encourage all those friends we left there to continue walking with Him.
