Student Ministry Awards Night

Since 2006, our student ministry has had an awards night inspired by and with the help of the student ministry at Cy-Fair Christian Church from Houston, Texas.  This is a great evening where we can honor students who have stood out as potential leaders, encouragers, servants, and a willingness to grow.  Unfortunately, this year the Short-Term Mission team was unable to come.  However, our student ministry leaders continued with the tradition of holding the awards night as they worked very hard to raise the money needed in order to accomplish the task.  In the end, it was a successful event that once again brought the students together.  Each year has a theme, this year it was "Professionals."

There are four awards we give out:
1.  NUEVA GENERACION (New Generation) - "New Generation" refers to students who are in their first year of Secondary School (7th grade).  The student awarded this is someone who has shown an ability to lead.
2.  ENTUSIASMO (Spirit) - This is awarded to the student that has portrayed enthusiasm in anything he does, participates in activities, and encourages others to participate as well.
3.  SERVIR (Servant) - This is awarded to the student who has shown leadership qualities by serving others before themselves; seeing a need and fulfilling it.
4.  CORAZON VALIENTE (Brave Heart) - This is awarded to the student who has shown extreme spiritual growth as they take on challenges they wouldn't normally attempt.

Here is a video of the past few years.  The commentary is in Spanish, but it should speak for itself.

This year's winners were:

Anahí Díaz for NEW GENERATION AWARD
Cecilio Rodriguez for SPIRIT AWARD
Guillermo Orozco for SERVANT AWARD

Jesús Orozco for BRAVE HEART AWARD

Pastors Unite; "Let's Praise God Together"

This week Centro Cristiano's Lead Pastor, Gollo, and Youth Pastor, Luis, and I went to visit another Pastor, Israel, in a small town called, El Tigre (The Tiger).  Both Gollo and Luis have met him before.  It was my first time to visit this town and meet Pastor Israel.  We spent over three hours just talking about our ministries, personal lives, and God.  It was a really good time.

One of the things that we've been praying about here is the possibility of extending our ministry presence as a church and also as a mission base.  This meeting confirmed our prayers as doors were opened to help Pastor Israel and his congregation reach his town.  He has invited our youth to do an open-air evangelistic outreach in the center of the town and is eager for help in other aspects as well.  We are eager to help.  He is a Pastor that has a lot of work as he also preaches in two other towns where there are no churches.  Jesus said it perfectly, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few."  In the future, we hope to be able to work together and see God's Kingdom advanced.

As we were stepping out the front door of Pastor Israel's house, another local Pastor rode by on his motorcycle as he was helping the government with a short seasonal job.  When we called to him and greeted him, he said to us that he was about to go visit us in Cofradía.  Pastor Samuel has been to Cofradía on two occasions to preach; one time during our huge Youth Event "EL RETO."  We, as well, have taken a Short-Term Mission team to do an open-air evangelism in the town he pastors, San Vicente.  When he came to speak at EL RETO, he was so impressed with the impact it has in youth's lives that he started one with a bit of a different twist in purpose with his youth.  He will be meeting with us here next week to talk about ideas and where to go now that he's started it.  Pastor Samuel is another who would like to work together and we are eager to help!

On our way home, we stopped by Pastor José's church in Rosamorada to talk about his invitation to speak in Cofradía on April 6, Good Friday.  As we talked with Pastor José, he mentioned that in his conversations with other pastors in the region, there is a mutual agreement to unite.  Pastors from different denominations are wanting to set aside their doctrinal differences and come together united to what we have in common, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and "Praise God Together."  This is something that really excites me as we've been praying for the same.  We want to extend the Kingdom of God, help the churches that need help, and Praise God Together!

Please join us in prayer for Cofradía and this region.  "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." (Matthew 9:37-38)

Vision Juvenil in Tepic

Some of our students had the opportunity to be part of a Youth Conference put on by La Fuente Ministries in Tepic, Nayarit.  It was an incredible time with great teaching.  There were over 1,000 people there mostly from Nayarit, Jalisco, and Sinaloa, but there were another 1,000 watching on the internet.  Vision Juvenil is a ministry out of El Paso, Texas.  This event charged everyone from here that went.  Thank you La Fuente Ministries.

MARCH UPDATE

Greetings, from Cofradía, Mexico!  We really appreciate your prayers and involvement in this ministry and in our family.

Last month, we asked for your prayers concerning:

  • Administration.   Thank you for your prayers as I was able to accomplish a lot this month.
  • Homeschool.  As I work with Emma in the mornings and Rebecka in the afternoons,  there are days in which it’s a struggle for all of us.  They are doing really well; please keep this in your prayers.
  • Marriage and Family Conference.  We had a great visit with Doug and Jan Taylor, former Cofradía Missionaries now in Mazatlán, as they shared on Leadership, Marriage, and Family.  It was a very refreshing time to have them back for the weekend and everyone here misses them.  I have written a report on our blog with pics here.
  • Inauguration Anniversary.  WOW is the word that describes our celebration of one year in the new building.  We invited some Pastor friends, Noe and Martha, from Mazatlan and many lives were impacted.  I’ve written a report on our blog with pics here.
  • New Baby.  Things are going well.  It was a rough beginning, but Geña is doing a lot better.  Thank you so much for your continued prayers as the baby is due in late August.

Links to other news:
  • Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child sent boxes for our children for the first time in the new building and a team from the Cofradía church went up into the mountains to hand out over 100 boxes to a Cora Indian village called “Cofradía Uno”.
  • Upper Room Project If you’ve been following our updates, you know we’ve been working on finishing our house.  With what have have saved and raised, we are over half way to reaching our goal.  Please continue to keep this in your prayers and if you can help, we’d appreciate it.  We’d like to have it ready for when the baby arrives in late August.  Please check out the link in order to see how you can help.

This Month’s requests:
  • Homeschool Please continue to make this a priority when you pray for us.
  • Baby Thank you for your continued prayers for a healthy baby.  The due date is +/- Aug.29
  • Pastor Gollo’s Son Please keep in your prayers Pastor Gollo’s son, Gollito, as he was in a motorcycle accident just over a week ago.  He is recovering well, however, there will be some dental issues to take care of as he knocked out a few teeth.
  • Youth Ministry Awards Night One of the many ways that Short Term Missions has impacted this ministry is helping us start a tradition in the youth ministry of recognizing and honoring students who have stood out this past year in their growth of leadership and service.  Thank you for your prayers over this ministry led by Pastor Luis Vazquez (Mar. 10).

Thank you very much for partnering with us through your prayers and financial support.

WOW!!

WOW!!

This one word sums up our Church building's One Year Anniversary that we celebrated this past weekend.  There were many factors that showed us the Lords hand working in order for this day to turn out the way it did.

One year ago on February 27, we inaugurated the new church facilities, dedicating it to the Lord.  We wanted to celebrate this event and Honor God for his provision and protection over this ministry.  Our church is growing and taking ownership as each member participated in providing food, donations, and serving others.  It was a well-oiled machine.

We were excited to have Pastors Noé and Martha from Mazatlan with us to share the event.  While they were here, as we were taking them to tacos the first night for dinner, we ended up praying for the sick as we unexpectedly had come across them.  As we visited about how the Lord directed them to come, Martha told us that she had a dream they came to preach just before the invitation.  Also, from the moment of the invitation, the Lord had given Noe a message, but he struggled with it thinking that it was inappropriate.  As he continued to not understand why this message, he never had peace about anything else.  When I sent him the vision of the church, he said it was confirmation.  It fit right inside what he felt the Lord speaking to him.  His message was about God's Opportune Time; a message that challenged us to step up and step out in our spiritual growth as we take ownership of what has been established already. The message was sent to us in perfect timing!  The message and prayer time at the end went a little longer than usual, but no one really noticed; everything was perfect.  As I was playing my guitar during the ministry time, I couldn't help but think about God's goodness.  He is such a wonderful God and plans things in perfect timing.  We couldn't have planned a better Anniversary party for the church.  It was an incredible blessing from the Lord!

After the service, a few church members shared testimonies and some songs.  Then, we all had lunch together.

A little history about Noe and Martha...

Martha, Noé, Esteban, Geña
In 1988, I went on my first missions trip to Mexico with our youth group.  I was 16 years old and the only male on our small team not counting our Youth Pastor, Ron McClung.  It was an unforgettable, life-changing trip for me.  It was during that trip that I met Martha and some of her brothers and sisters as we worked along side her church.  Her and her youngest siblings were all about my age and we kept in contact for a long time.  I remember seeing the fervent power of God and dedication to the Lord in their lives and I wanted to do the same.  It was also during that trip that God called me to missions.  A few years later I met Noe and we have been good friends ever since.

Operation Christmas Child

Once again Operation Christmas Child arrived in our region this year.  Thanks to Jay and Faith TenBrink for their work on organizing this opportunity, we were able to realize Operation Christmas Child for the first time in the new church on January 6 as well as in the mountains this past weekend with the Cora Indians in a village called "Cofradía Uno."

This is always an incredible event.  Most of these children never receive a Christmas gift.  The oversized smile that stretched across their faces and the sparkle in their eyes as they received these gifts were priceless!

Thank you for your prayers, as these gifts were doors in order to share with each child the gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ.

Conference with the Taylors

It is always a blessing to have Doug and Jan Taylor with us in Cofradía.  The Taylors lived here for 8 years and during that time built relationships with many of the locals, the church, and especially the staff.  After meeting with Doug each week during a mentoring time while they lived here, I have grown to really appreciate him and the excitement I feel when we get a chance to "chat" is such as that of a little child on Christmas morning when he sees his presents.  They are invaluable to us in our personal lives, marriages, parenting skills, and leadership skills.

It was a pleasure to have them with us this past weekend as they spoke four times: to the leaders about our character, to the marriages about being a team, to the parents about what method of training we should use, and on Sunday to the whole congregation about putting on the New Man.  What an incredible time!  If you have not heard them speak, you don't know what you're missing!

Thank you to those of you who keep our ministry in prayer and support this ministry financially.  It's you who help make weekends like this possible.

Here is what Doug and Jan had to say about their time in Cofradía,

"It is always great to reconnect with the people of Cofradia and area.  We feel so loved and appreciated.  We saw the faithfulness of God as He knit together the four messages of the weekend and used them to touch the hearts of the people.  We were encouraged to see the response of the people and believe that seeds were sown and fruit that lasts will come."

JANUARY UPDATE

Greetings, from Cofradía, Mexico!  We are excited to share with you some of  the things that have been happening in our part of the world.  First of all, we want to thank you so much for your faithfulness in praying and supporting this ministry.  We are blessed to have such a great team of friends and family partnering with us.  Really, words cannot express our gratefulness to you as these past few months have been busier than normal; we’ve really needed your prayers!

Last month, we asked for your prayers concerning:

  • Parents’ Visit: It was an extremely huge blessing to have my parents with us for Christmas and New Years.  That time of year is the best time in Cofradía; the weather is nice and it’s so fun to be able to visit people and spend time with them around bonfires and barbecues.  We were a little more busy this year than in years past, but we were still able to spend some quality time together as a family.  There’s lots more to read and see on our blog post of their time here.
  • Youth Activities: The youth ministry is doing really well under the supervision of Pastor Luis.  The annual Christmas party went really well and a number of un-churched students participated in the Winter Sports Tournament that is designed to be a door of opportunity to share with them the love of Christ which was done successfully.
  • Upper Room Project: We have been working hard on getting the roof done before the rains.  Just this Monday, the cement trucks came and poured the roof.  There are a few more details to be taken care of in order to finish and seal the roof.  Windows are going to be a high priority for us as it would be very easy for someone to hop through one and invite themselves in the house.  Click here for more updated pictures and comments..
  • Follow up of New Believers: We have been working hard to develop structure for the local church that will enable them to make follow-up natural for them.  Thank you for keeping this in your prayers.
  • Ministry Transition: Things are going very well.  Please keep praying as this has become one of the main focuses of the Mission Base and Church.  It is a very exciting time and in much need of your continued faithful prayers.

Links to other news:
  • Short Term Mission Teams in January. We had two teams in January, a women’s team that came to work specifically with the women’s ministry and a men’s team who came to put pavers in our church’s courtyard.  They are regular teams that come down and they did an excellent job, again.  Here is a little more info.
  • Church Courtyard Pavers. A report about Short-term Missions team, His Place Church, helping us by setting pavers in the church’s courtyard.  Click here to see the new improvements

This Month’s requests:
  • Administration.   I would appreciate your prayers this next month as I will be dealing with a number of administrative tasks with our family, the mission base, and the church.  I ask the Lord for a clear mind, encouragement, strength, and wisdom to complete these tasks.
  • Homeschool.  This is an area that I really struggle with for the mental energy and patience it requires.  Please pray that time, patience, wisdom, and willingness to learn would all be plentiful as I meet with Emma in the mornings and Rebecka in the afternoons.
  • Marriage and Family Conference.  Former Alternative Missions Cofradía Missionaries, Doug and Jan Taylor, will be with us to meet with our church leaders (2/16) and the congregation (2/17 – 2/19) as they speak in this conference.
  • Inauguration Anniversary.  We will be celebrating one year in our new building on Sunday, February 26, with a special service and meal.
  • New Baby.  We are excited to announce that Rebecka and Emma will be sisters of a new baby in August!  Please pray for Geña during the pregnancy and keep this in your prayers over the next upcoming months.

Thank you very much for partnering with us through your prayers and financial support.

Church Courtyard Pavers

His Place Church from Burlington, Washington sent 5 men to help us with the project of putting in pavers in the church's courtyard.  We have had difficulty during the rainy season with it being very muddy.  The slope of the ground causes that mud to run right to the main door making it a big job on Sunday mornings to clean before people come.  We still would like to put a cement slab between the pavers and the rocks in order to have vehicle access to the library.  Here are a few pictures of the project in process and the final product at the end.  THANK YOU HIS PLACE!

Silberman Christmas in Cofradía

What a joy it was to have my parents here for their first Christmas in Cofradía.  It was an unforgettable time filled with memory making moments.  One of the most memorable things that happened the impact that Santa Claus has on not just children, but adults as well.  Why?  Take a look...
It was comical as to how many people turned their heads and made comments (sometimes not knowing that I could understand).  He even had someone come up to him on Christmas Day asking him where their presents were....oops!   Everywhere we went, people thought, and kids believed he was Santa.  One little boy commented, "He really does exist!"  It was fun, and people had fun getting their pictures taken with him at the house, at Church, and even at the Mall in Tepic (even the fake Santa there got his picture with him).
More memorable moments were spent with Rebecka and Emma playing "Slap-Jack," "Spoons," putting puzzles together, coloring, and watching movies.

We ventured out on a couple of trips away from Cofradía to Puerta Platanares to see the coffee fields and learn a little of the process on how they're grown, picked, dried, and cleaned.  We also saw the pineapple fields as they are starting to flower.

Also, we went to Aguamilpa; which is a humongous lake in the mountains.  The attraction there is the damn that provides electricity to the whole state of Nayarit.

Many more memories were made, but along with bonfires on Christmas Eve and again on New Year's Eve accompanied with an Armadillo feast, these were just some highlights.

Here are some more pictures of our time together...
the first night in Mazatlán with Roger and Hazel was a great way to start!

I'm beginning to wonder if....

Hugo and his family

Adopted son, Max. :)

Christmas morning.
Hugo took us out to his corn and been field.
Can't wait until next time they come.  It was a lot of fun!

Short Term Missions in Cofradía

We are blessed to have had many, many people come through Cofradía to work on the church, the mission base, and in the community coupled with ministering to children, youth, and adults; sometimes in a general sense, mostly with a specific purpose.  We are very thankful for these Short Term Missionaries who made commitments to help shine the light of Jesus in the hearts of people.  We welcome you if you would like to do the same or reconnect with a friend you made in this ministry.  One of the most impactful things we can do is build relationships.

Building relationship is what Cy-Fair Christian Church from Houston, Texas has done for many years by sending youth teams and adult teams to minister with a specific purpose in mind.  Each year they send a team of women to minister to the women in our church.  What an exciting time!  All year long our women look forward to their return.  The past couple of years, they have finished their time with a huge overnight pajama party just for women while the children stay home with their dads.  The only thing I know is that they stay up all night long and their singing and laughter can be heard beyond the confines of the church walls.  The excitement that is heard is incredible.  The relationships that are built and nurtured are unforgettable.  God's work through them is undeniable.  They laugh together and they cry together.  Amazing.

One of the team members has been writing about her experiences and the relationships she has built.  She has given me permission to pass this link on to you: Click Here.

His Place Community Church from Burlington, Washington is another team that comes down frequently as a construction team to accomplish specific jobs.  They have become well known here as hard workers and very relational.  This week they are here working on the church's courtyard installing a special cobblestone, which will be very nice during the rainy season, as it gets really muddy.  They are doing a great job.

If you have an interest in serving people through missions, I invite you to be part of or put together a team.  There are many things we can do.  Let's be creative and partner together to help support the local church, raise up leaders, serve the community, and share the love of Jesus to those who don't know him.

The Upper Room Project

Help make a difference in Cofradía through The Upper Room Project.

DECEMBER UPDATE

Merry Christmas Everyone from Cofradía, Mexico!  As the cool weather approaches, it’s nice to sit down in the morning with a hot cup of coffee and consider the day and the different aspects of our life and ministry.  Our prayer is that this time of year is a joyous celebration for you as we are reminded of our Savior's birth.  Some of you will be with family, others may not.  Still, others might be missing loved one’s who have passed this year.  Our hearts go out to you.  May the Lord bring His Peace upon your life, especially in this time.

Last month, we asked for your prayers concerning:

  • Pastor Gollo, he is in good health.  He has had some studies done and after investigating, it appears to be something very minimal and for no need of an operation.  Thank you VERY MUCH for praying for this issue.
  • Youth Concert Thank you for continuing to lift up the student ministry as they make good efforts to reach out to their peers.
  • Border Trip Thank you for your prayers over our family as we travelled to and from Tucson, AZ to take care of a couple of business items and spend time with our friends’ family during Thanksgiving.  It was a very busy time for us leaving us with minimal time to rest.  However, we enjoyed our time and the new people we met.
  • Pastor Rafael Gradilla came last weekend and, as always, he made a great impact on the lives of our Pastor, Leaders, Church, and even the visitors who came to our Evangelistic outreach.  There were 6 people who have never come to church before who responded to the invitation of receiving Christ into their hearts.  One of which was a wonderful surprise to see step forward, Doña Chuy (for those of you who know Pastor Horacio, it’s his mother-in-law).  We had an excellent time of fellowship and teaching and wish that the time could have been longer.  Thank you for your prayers.

This Month’s requests:

  • Parents’ Visit: We are all excited for a visit from my parents between December 13 – January 5.  It will be their first Christmas with us in Mexico.  Please pray for travel safety and good health while they are here.
  • Youth Christmas Party: Each year the students have a Christmas Party where they invite their friends to youth group.  This usually has a good turn-out.  Please pray that the students who come will be impacted during this time (December 17).
  • Youth Winter Sports Tournaments:  Our Annual Winter Sports Tournament for the youth will take place the week of December 26 – 31.  This is another door for the unchurched to know Christ.
  • Upper Room Project: We have started building our upstairs rooms and are praying that you can be part of the Lord’s provision to finish the roof before the rainy season.  Sometimes, a rain or two will come in January or February.  We need to raise at least $8000 more dollars.  You can send a one-time gift before the end of the year or extend a gift over 6 months, whichever is more convenient for you.  Donate here and make a note that it’s for the Silberman’s Home:
  • Follow up of New Believers: Please continue to keep in prayer the new believers and that the Lord will give us wisdom in the follow-up.
  • Ministry Transition: Thank you for continuing to keep this ministry in your prayers as we follow the Lord’s direction during our transition period.  The initial changes have been set in place, our mission and new vision have been established, now we need patience and wisdom to carry out God’s call on us in this part of the world as more changes will be necessary.  Please pray, also, that the church body adjusts well to this transition time as well.

NOVEMBER UPDATE

Greetings Everyone from Cofradía, Mexico!  New beginnings is a good summary of the past month in Cofradia.  A Marriage Class was started and will meet the first Sunday of each month, it’s called “Unteaching Marriages” as some of the things locals have grown up to “know” about marriage are contrary to scripture.  Also, our new Missionary Staff spent a couple of days in Mazatlan on an Off-Site Retreat to reflect, plan, and prepare for the future.  And, another ministry transition has taken place as I have stepped down from being the Student Ministry Director and handed to my right-hand man, Pastor Luis Vazquez.  Finally, we have begun the continued construction of our home.

Last month, we asked for your prayers concerning:

  • Staff Retreat.  This was a great time of getting away, being with each other, and re-evaluating our goals.  Thank you for your prayers, you can read about it here.
  • Visitors.  Thank you for your prayers as a couple from the US came to travel up to the mountains with Jay to minister to the Cora Indians.  Their trip was very smooth and were able to communicate the gospel to the people.

This Month’s requests:
  • Pastor Gollo is going through a series of tests for his health.  Please keep him in your prayers as surgery is in his near future.  Finances will be an issue.
  • Youth Concert The Student Ministry will be putting on a concert to invite their friends to learn about Jesus.  Pray for open doors and open hearts. (Nov. 12)
  • Border Trip Our family will be going to Arizona for a couple of weeks to take care of some business, do some shopping, rest a little, and spend Thanksgiving with some friends. (Nov. 14-28)
  • Pastor Rafael Gradilla from Hosana Asamblea in Bellevue, Washington will be sharing with our leaders and congregation soon.  His pastoral leadership has a tremendous impact on the people here and we’re all excited to have him come.  Please pray for open hearts and safe travels. House Construction

The final phase of our house has begun.  Hugo (Geña's brother) started working last week and we're pretty excited about this--especially Rebecka and Emma!  It will be nice to have some extra room as the girls are getting older.

Our immediate goal will be to put up the walls and roof before the next rainy season.  To make sure that we can do that, we'll need $10,000.  Can you help?

Donate online here or click here to view other ways if donating online is not for you.  Thank you.
